Three managing partners lead PDI team of professionals:
Alain Paul Martin, Dr. J. André
Potworowski and
Dr. Norman G. Willis. All three have served
as senior executives of organizations dealing with complex global issues.
Dr. Willis is a distinguished scientist and a leading international authority in the prevention,
eradication and control of animal diseases. He has held prominent executive leadership positions,
notably as Executive Director of the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health, and
as President of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), in Paris (France),
where his accomplishments, subsequently, earned him the lifetime title of Honorary
President. Dr. Willis holds a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a PhD in Virology.
Alain Martin and André Potworowski are alumni of the Harvard Business School
and both have served as senior
executives in large companies and in advisory committees for The Prime Minister
of Canada. Both have taught management in Graduate Schools of Management and
both have a current background and experience in information technology (IT) and
entrepreneurship.

Senior Partner: Michael Rees, PhD, MBA,
A citizen of both Canada and the United Kingdom, Dr. Michael Rees is recognized throughout
Europe and North America for his cutting-edge expertise in
complex risk assessment and mitigation, quantitative methods, and strategic and financial modelling.
Greatly appreciated for his outstanding abilities in teaching, he combines a sound practical
experience with a distinguished education in
mathematics and business administration.
Dr. Rees currently also acts as European Director of Training and Consulting for Palisade Corporation.
He is an Invited lecturer on Real Options on the Wilmott Certificate in Quantitative Finance program.
His experience includes Vice President of J.P. Morgan in the UK, Principal at Mercer Management Consulting
in Germany and the UK, and Manager at Braxton Associates (now Deloitte and Touche) in Germany.
Michael holds a PhD in Mathematics from Oxford University, a Certificate in Quantitative
Finance (won Wilmott Award and graduated top of class) and an MBA with
Distinction from INSEAD in France. He is Associate Fellow of the Institute
of Mathematics and its Applications (AFIMA).
Dr. John Brian Morrissey, DVM, MBA
Dr. Morrissey has an outstanding track record in managing research teams and complex
issues, as Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) of the Research Branch in the Department of Agriculture
and Agri-Food, and as ADM for Science at the Department of Fisheries & Oceans. In Agriculture
Canada, Dr. Morrissey was ADM for Food Production & Inspection Branch (now the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency), Director General of its Food Inspection Directorate, and Director of Canada's
Animal Health Division, where he was responsible for Canada's animal disease control programs. For
three years, Dr. Morrissey has lectured in the Executive MBA program of the University of Ottawa.
He was received as a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, London, England in 1965.
He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Warwick University, England, and a
diploma in Public Policy and Public Administration from the University of Guelph, Ontario. He
was also awarded Canada's "Outstanding Achievement Award". This is the highest award given by
Canada to its public servants. Furthermore, Dr. Morrissey is a recipient of the French Ministry
of Agriculture's professional designation known as "Chevalier dans l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole"
for advancing Franco-Canadian cooperation in research.
Alan Breakspear
Mr. Breakspear is a leading authority in knowledge
management, competitive intelligence,
strategic early warning and risk management. He is adjunct professor in the University of
Ottawa’s School of Management where he has taught competitive intelligence in the Executive MBA
program. For PDI clients, he provides research, analysis, interpretation and due diligence expertise
in support of strategic decisions, innovation, and change-management projects in the public and private
sectors including aerospace, mining, energy, communications, manufacturing, health and defence.
Alan has been a featured speaker and workshop leader at conferences throughout North America.
He served as Chair of the Science, Technology & Environment Program Advisory Board of Royal Roads
University, where he participated in developing ground-breaking graduate programs in knowledge management.
After graduating from the University of Western Ontario, Alan joined the intelligence community as an
analyst and went on to reach senior-management positions (up to Assistant Deputy Minister level) in the
Communications Security Establishment, Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Treasury Board and Privy
Council Office. He is an alumnus of Canada’s National Defence College and the founding Chair of the National
Capital Chapter of the Society for Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP).
Professor Pierre G. Bergeron
Professor Bergeron is an award-winning
author on finance who has made an immensely valuable contribution in the
advancement of management best practices, accountability and
good governance. He was Director in Corporate Finance at Domtar,
and led market analysis and capital project evaluation at
Imperial Oil. He also was a senior executive in several
departments of the Federal Government prior to pursuing a
distinguished career as a professor of management and associate
dean at the University of Ottawa.
Prof. Bergeron has written extensively on finance,
planning, budgeting, and capital budgeting for professional journals including
CAmagazine, CMA Magazine, CGA Magazine, Banker and ICB Review, the Financial
Post, and Optimum. He is the author of eight books including Finance for
Non-Financial Managers; Survivor's Guide to Finance; Modern Management in
Canada; Gestion dynamique: concepts, méthodes et applications; Planification,
budgétisation et gestion par objectifs; and Capital Expenditure Planning for
Growth and Profit. He is the recipient of the Walter J. MacDonald award for his
series of articles on capital budgeting decisions, which appeared in the
CAmagazine. He has assisted Industry Canada in designing a Web-based program to
help entrepreneurs raise risk funds from venture capital markets. He also
participated in producing The ABCs of Financial Performance Measures and
Benchmarks for Canada's Tourism Sector and Finding Funding for the Canadian
Tourism Commission. He also collaborated in the production of a series of videos
on finance. He created financial-planning framework to help managers gauge the
impact of business strategies, plans and budgets on financial statements, and to
make business decisions using cutting-edge yardsticks for time-value-of-money
investment.

Renaud Paquet, PhD
A member of PDI Negotiation-and-Mediation Consulting Team and Faculty both in French and English,
Prof. Renaud Paquet is a distinguished scholar, hands-on arbitrator and mediator,
and a leading authority
in the fields of industrial relations and principled negotiation.
A full-tenured professor, Renaud teaches interest-based negotiation, collective bargaining, and employment dispute resolution,
at the undergraduate,
graduate, and doctoral levels. He has published widely on interest-based negotiation and industrial relations.
Renaud holds a PhD from the University of Montreal, and has
pursued post-doctoral studies on industrial relations at Cornell University. His ground breaking research
earned him numerous distinctions including the Governor General's Award.
John S. Andrew, PhD
A recent member of PDI Faculty, Prof. John S. Andrew is a leading authority in the fields of managerial and environmental negotiation
and mediation, conflict management, strategic consensus-building and other
alternative-dispute-resolution (ADR) mechanisms.
John lectures on interest-based negotiation, conflict management, inter-government dispute resolution,
both at the undergraduate and
graduate levels. He has published widely, particularly on waste-management disputes. He is a featured speaker
in high demand, both in the United States and Canada. John holds a PhD from the University of Toronto,
with a dissertation on environmental disputes,
a Master of Science in Planning, also from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Science from the
University of Western Ontario.
Robert Jackson, PhD
Prof. Bob Jackson consults for The Professional Development Institute since 1985. He received a Ph.D.
on British political parties from Oxford University.
His career began at Carleton University where he was chair of Political Science from 1976 to
1983. He served on the editorial boards
of the leading academic journals in his field such as the American Political Science Review.
He was the founder of the Business Research Committee of the International Political Science
Association. By the end of the 1970s, almost half of the chairs of Canadian departments of
political science were his former students and today there are several federal cabinet ministers,
many MPs, MLAS and public servants who studied politics under his tutelage at Carleton, McGill
and Oxford. He also taught comparative and European government to several Rhodes scholars.
Bob held visiting professorships at the Australian National University (5 times); The Free
University of Berlin; Mannheim University; Erasmus University; Griffith University; the University
of New England; the Atlantic Institute; the University of Oxford; and the Centre for International
Studies at the University of Cambridge.
Dr Jackson's publication record is impressive. By the end of 2006 he will have written or edited
18 books and 50 articles, as well as hundreds of journalistic pieces. His textbooks, Politics in
Canada and Contemporary Government and Politics: Democracy and Authoritarianism
are used throughout
the country and have sold well over 130,000 copies. His Comparative Introduction to Political
Science is among Prentice Hall's flagship textbooks in the USA. His academic books run from Canadian
government to international and strategic affairs and include works on Britain, France, Mexico,
Australia, the Philippines, and NATO. His articles cover politics throughout the world - in North
America, Europe, and Asia.
Professor Jackson retains his partnership with The Professional
Development Institute for consulting and lecturing on Government Policy, Government Machinery, Public
Accountability, Governance and Comparative Politics.
Alan Levy
Widely recognized in the fields of negotiation, labor relations
and alternative dispute resolution, Alan Levy has 24 years of experience in facilitating business
deals and resolving various kinds of employment disputes. He has worked in
the private and public sectors, both as a senior manager, on the employer's side,
and as a union negotiator. This balance of both union and senior management
responsibilities has been a hallmark of Alan's career.
A recent member of PDI Faculty, Alan has lectured
on interest-based negotiation, conflict resolution, social psychology,
human resources and labor relations
in Europe, the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, and in Canada for the University of Toronto, York
University, Ryerson, and Concordia University, both at the undergraduate and
graduate levels. A recipient of the prestigious Morley Gunderson Prize for
outstanding accomplishments in labor relations and human-resource management,
Alan is also active as an executive board member on a number of professional
societies, and is a member of the American Bar Association. He holds a Masters
of Law from Osgoode Hall, York University, in Alternative Dispute Resolution,
and a Masters of Industrial Relations from the Centre for Industrial Relations
of the University of Toronto.
